At ESA South, our mission goes beyond supporting government projects nationwide. We find an exceptional sense of purpose when our work directly benefits the veterans who have selflessly defended our freedoms. That purpose deepens when we contribute to facilities with profound historical significance—like the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
This remarkable facility serves approximately 80,000 veterans annually and holds a special place in history. Named after Audie L. Murphy, the most decorated soldier of World War II, it was the first VA hospital in the country to honor a soldier in its name. Murphy's extraordinary service earned him the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars with valor, three Purple Hearts, and numerous accolades from France and Belgium. It’s an honor for ESA South to support a facility with such a storied legacy.
In October 2023, ESA South was awarded a $29.4 million contract to modernize the hospital’s Electronic Health Records Management (EHRM) infrastructure. This extensive project will involve upgrading 43 rooms across seven floors of the main building, as well as a smaller police annex on the property. These improvements will enhance the VA's ability to integrate medical records for transitioning service members and modernize its software systems to provide veterans with the highest standard of care.
Arturo Gonzales, ESA South’s superintendent and project manager, shared insights into some of the project’s unique challenges: “In one area, we’ll be converting an office space into a data center and vice versa. In another, we’ll need to demolish an interior wall and roof system covered with rocks and gravel. We see these as welcome challenges and tackle them with a can-do attitude.”
This effort is a collaboration with our trusted subcontractors—Regimental Contracting, Aerohead Mechanical, and Citizen Contracting Group. Together, we’re committed to delivering a project that honors the legacy of Audie L. Murphy and supports the veterans who depend on this vital facility. The work is set to be completed by mid-2025.
We’re proud to play a role in this project and remain dedicated to serving those who have served us.
